Is online legal document assistance a good idea?

Consumers in search of legal help or legal document assistance have more options today than ever before.  And their options are growing, especially with the advent of low cost divorce assistance and other legal services online.  Companies like LegalZoom.com, MyDivorceDocuments.com, CompleteCase.com, MyCompleteCase.com, etc., do a great job marketing their online divorce and other legal document services, but in my years of experience, VERY few divorce or family law related services actually get completed with these online companies, especially when there are children and/or assets or debts to deal with.  The marketing of these online legal services makes the process seem simple, or as easy as 1, 2, 3, but it is not in most all cases.  The first step of preparing the initial documents is the easiest and can, in most all cases, be done simply or easily.  But, then the next steps or serving the Respondent, dealing with custody, support or assets/debts, becomes much more difficult and the document preparation or process is much more complicated and difficult to figure out on your own.  The online companies state they will give you phone support, but good luck.  I am not saying the online sources are not trying to make a good attempt or effort at helping, but it is difficult to review the documents over the phone with someone on the other end that is not looking at or understanding the document or steps in the process that the consumer is trying to figure out or navigate through.

As a Legal Document Assistant, doing low cost and quality legal documents for many years, I have had many occasions where consumers purchased an online legal document service or product and simply could not finish the service with that company.  They are frustrated, confused and many times upset that they spent money and a lot of time trying to figure out the how to complete the legal forms and entire process.  Then, after I spend just a few minutes reviewing their documents and matter, I am able to complete the service for the customer very quickly.   The bad part is that the customer must now pay me to complete the service and does not always get a refund from the online company, mostly because they just do not want to contact them again even to ask for a refund.

So, the long and short of the matters becomes, if you are a consumer of books, then buy from Amazon.com, but if you are a consumer of a legal document service, then you may want to steer clear of low cost online document preparation packages or services and in most case pay just a little more to get the personal attention and service that these divorce and family law matters usually require.
